Osprey-Nesting Platform Installed at Dick Young Forest Preserve

Exciting news! An osprey-nesting platform has been installed at Dick Young Forest Preserve!

Osprey are a rare nesting species in Kane County and are currently listed as threatened in Illinois. By providing a safe and sturdy nesting platform, we hope to attract a breeding pair to raise their young.
Dick Young Forest Preserve was selected as the host site due to its large, shallow, open body of water known as Nelson Lake Marsh, which will provide ample hunting and habitat for these majestic birds.

This project was made possible by the Kane Forest Preserve Foundation. Thank you to everyone who shopped the Kane Native Plant Sale in 2022. Those proceeds made this platform happen!

In addition, we’d also like to thank Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) for donating the pole and for working with District staff on the construction and installation.
