A permanent monument has been dedicated to honor the service and life of fallen Kane County Sheriff K9 Hudson. Hudson, a Dutch Shepherd who served Kane County for nearly three years, was killed in Geneva on May 24, 2023, during the apprehension of a carjacking suspect.

“This is a very meaningful time for us. K9 Hudson is a member of our family,” said Sheriff Ron Hain during the dedication on Friday, September 13. “He gave his life for the protection of others, which is at the core of what we do at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.”

During his career, Hudson was involved in over 100 tracks of criminal offenders and missing persons. He was instrumental in apprehending several violent offenders, protecting not only his handler but also other deputies and members of the public. Hudson also played a key role in the seizure of over $5 million in U.S. currency, determined to be proceeds from illicit activities, along with 100 kilos of illegal narcotics.       Hudson MEMORIAL image.jpg

“We are unable to determine how many times K9 Hudson’s mere presence prevented violent encounters between criminals and law enforcement, which is what police K9s are all about,” Sheriff Hain said. “They are a deterrent to further acts of crime and criminal behavior, and Hudson exemplified that role.”

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office currently has 12 K9s, making it the largest unit outside of Cook County. Sheriff Hain noted that the memorial, created by St. Charles Monuments, was funded through the Sheriff’s Asset Forfeiture Fund. It now sits on the southeast side of the Sheriff’s Office on the Kane County Judicial Campus in St. Charles.
