Kane County Forest Preserve Invites Community to Track Spring Ephemerals

Forest Preserve District of Kane County Social Media Post 3/3/2025 6:00AM

Spring ephemerals are woodland plants that bloom early in the season, taking advantage of sunlight before trees fully leaf out. From March 1 through May 31, the Kane County Forest Preserve District encourages nature enthusiasts to help track the arrival of these fleeting wildflowers by submitting observations through the free iNaturalist app under the project "Kane County, IL: Spring 2025 Ephemerals." Participants can document blooms in forest preserves, parks, or even their own backyards.

To support identification, plant identification signs will be posted along woodland trails at Burnidge, Bliss Woods, and Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserves. These signs, sponsored by the Kane Forest Preserve Foundation, will help visitors learn more about the diverse species of spring ephemerals found throughout the county.

No registration is required to participate, and all are welcome to explore the preserves and enjoy the beauty of these seasonal wildflowers.
