Kane County Reminds Property Owners of Common Code Enforcement Violations

Kane County’s Code Enforcement Division works to preserve property values, protect neighborhoods and ensure compliance with Kane County ordinances.  

The guidelines apply exclusively to unincorporated areas of Kane County. Cities and villages enforce their own locally adopted ordinances.

Here's a reminder of some of the about common zoning and code violations:  

• Parking on unimproved surfaces: Vehicles must be parked on an improved surface, not on lawns, landscaped areas or other unimproved surfaces.
• Commercial vehicles: Commercial trucks, semi-tractors, buses and other commercial vehicles and equipment may be prohibited in residential zoning districts and on certain other properties.
• Businesses in residential areas: Operating a business, commercial activity or certain services on a residentially zoned property may not be permitted in most circumstances.
• Junk and debris: Accumulations of junk, trash, debris or other materials that create a public nuisance are prohibited.
• Inoperable vehicles and equipment: Inoperable, unlicensed or dismantled vehicles and equipment may not be stored on properties.
• Building without a permit: Constructing, altering or demolishing a structure without the required permit is a violation.
• Storage containers: Shipping and storage containers are not permitted on residentially zoned parcels.
• Overgrown lawns: Grass and weeds must be regularly mowed and maintained.
• Buildings in disrepair: Buildings must be maintained in good repair. Deterioration, damage or neglect is not permitted.
• Fences and accessory structures: Fences, sheds and other accessory structures must comply with zoning requirements, including location and permitting.
• Outdoor storage: Storage of materials, equipment, building supplies or personal property in the open is regulated and may be prohibited.
• Recreational vehicles and trailers: RVs, campers, trailers and boats must be parked on an improved surface.
