Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week - Penny
“Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog." – Sidney Jeanne Seward, author, Facing Reality…
Penny, lovely Penny, our 7-year-old spayed brown brindle Pit Bull terrier has been returned to KCAC!
She was originally owner-surrendered the first time through no fault of her own. It's easy to tell she was once owned because she seems to really do well on a leash, which is an added bonus for someone who enjoys walks and keeping active.
A month or so ago, Penny was adopted and everyone at KCAC was ecstatic. We wished her well and waited for updates.
Unfortunately, we did not know at the time that her new owner had cats that lived outdoors. It seemed that Penny has a hard time differentiating between her new owner's outdoor cats and the squirrels that run and play through the trees and bushes.
So, Penny, lovely Penny, who is probably mixed with part Pit Bull and maybe, part bloodhound, Labrador, and great squirrel hunter, thought those outdoor cats were somehow related to the tree cats she so enjoyed chasing.
Unfortunately, Penny's new owner was not willing to train her on the differences between outdoor and indoor felines, so Penny has once again found herself at KCAC awaiting the best owner she so deserves to appear.
Penny seems to like other dogs, however, although she will politely reprimand the younger ones that jump on her. If she meets an older dog as calm as she is, she will allow the other dog to sniff her and even give them an introductory play bow.
Recently, Penny introduced herself to an unaltered male. Immediately, both of them became a mirror image of each other as they play bowed and then quietly laid down together.
She loves a good squeaky toy or two or three to play with. Actually, the more the merrier. Throw them and she's all in with hunting them down to make them squeak.
As far as getting petted goes, Penny is definitely not adverse to it. In fact, a few scratches and soft petting sessions are mandatory for any family that decides to give her a fur-ever home.
Penny definitely answers the question of whether you can teach an old dog new tricks because she's working on the “down" command and already knows how to sit and shake.
She's willing to learn new things, but, as with anything else, it will just take time for the new information to sink in. She just needs that person or family to give her that time.
