Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week - Pookie

“What sort of philosophers are we, who know absolutely nothing of the origin and destiny of cats?" – Henry David Thoreau, American writer, naturalist, poet & essayist

In the grand scheme of things, a pregnant stray cat giving birth to 5 baby kittens is hardly news worthy.

It doesn't even cause a blip in the universe because there are so many cats just like her also giving birth under porches, sheds, garages, literally anywhere a future momma cat can find shelter.

The baby kittens emerge into a world that will treat them either with indifference or frustration that they were born in the first place. They have no home, no owners who will take care of them, protect them or give them a life in a safe environment.

With each passing day they continue to live outside, their chances of survival grow less and less.

That would have been the fate of Pookie, the 1-1/2-year-old spayed brown tabby Domestic Shorthair. She had already given birth to 5 kittens when she was found outside and brought to KCAC. Each kitten was given a name that begins with the letter 'P' by shelter staff. They were then neutered and spayed, vaccinated and, when they came of age, put up for adoption.

Pookie is a young mother that gave it all she had in order to raise her babies when she was merely a baby herself. For the first time in her young life, now that her babies have left the nest, she can finally know what it's like to be on the other side of living as a stray.

Even though Pookie is very outgoing and seems to enjoy spending her time with people, she probably will prefer to be the only pet in the home.

She's not shy to share her opinions with whoever is willing to listen and she doesn't hold back on the volume level. If you live alone and need someone to talk to, you can definitely count on Pookie to give her views on any subject—every day.

Pookie was a great mother to her babies, never abandoning them when they needed her the most.

Now, it's Pookie's time to shine so she can begin to live her best life!

Congratulations to Olive!

Her freedom-day was on the first day of July, just in time to celebrate the July 4th with her new family! She couldn't wait to leave, but as we all said our good-byes, she took the time to say goodbye to each person And then, when she was done, she went to the front door and waited expectantly for her new mom to open the door.

Always a lady and in her pink halter and leash, she was ready to meet the world!

Keep in touch, Olive! We are so happy for you!
