Events in Kane County Commemorate 9/11

September 11, 2024, marks the 23rd anniversary of 9/11. The anniversary commemorates the terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans in New York City, Virginia, and Shanksville, PA.
The following Kane County communities are hosting public events to remember 9/11:
- City of Elgin- The Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony will be held at 9:00 a.m. on September 11 at the Hemmens Cultural Center at 45 Symphony Way. The ceremony will include posting of the flags by the Elgin Fire Department and Elgin Police Department Honor Guards, the national anthem performed by Larkin High School students, remarks from city officials and American Legion Post 57 and "Amazing Grace" will be played on the bagpipes. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure seats and the event also will be live streamed on the Fire Department's Facebook page for those who are unable to attend in person.
- City of Aurora- The September 11 Memorial Ceremony will be held at 7:30 a.m. and hosted by the Aurora Police and Fire Departments at the Aurora Police Department, 1200 E. Indian Trail. The ceremony will feature a presentation of colors, a wreath laying by the Aurora Police and Honor Guards and comments from city officials. A moment of silence will be held at 7:46 a.m., the minute the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center.
- Village of Carpentersville- The September 11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the Carpentersville Fire Department, 213 Spring St. A Field of Honor for all first responders who died in the line of duty on September 11, 2001 also will be on display there through September 13. The Field of Honor includes 403 flags representing police officers, firefighters, paramedics and port authority members.
- St. Charles Fire Department- The annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held at 7:30 a.m. on September 11 outside the Fire Department Memorial Monument, 2 E. Main Street. The ceremony will include posting of the Fire Department Memorial Flag, posting the memorial wreath, remarks from members of the fire department and city and observing a moment of silence. In addition, there will be a 21-gun salute by local veterans and an invocation.
In addition, the Kane County Board will issue the following proclamation at its meeting on September 10, 2024 recognizing September 11, 2024 as Patriot Day- A Day of Remembrance- In Kane County, Illinois.
PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 11, 2024, AS PATRIOT DAY
– A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE –
IN KANE COUNTY, ILLINOIS
WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched an unprecedented and
coordinated attack on the United States of America, resulting in the tragic loss of nearly 3,000
innocent lives in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, in the days following the attacks, the nation united in mourning, with a
Presidential proclamation declaring September 14, 2001, as a National Day of Prayer and
Remembrance for the victims, and subsequently, September 11 was designated as Patriot Day,
a National Day of Service and Remembrance; and
WHEREAS, state and local governments, as well as the people of the United States, are
encouraged to observe Patriot Day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities, and to
display the flag of the United States at half-staff in honor of those who lost their lives; and
WHEREAS, this day provides an opportunity for all citizens to reflect on the resilience,
courage, and unity that emerged from this tragedy and to participate in community service as a
tribute to the heroes and victims of September 11, 2001.
THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the Kane County Board does hereby
proclaim September 11, 2024, as Patriot Day in Kane County, and calls upon all citizens to
observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time in memory of the innocent
victims of the attacks, and to participate in acts of community service as a tribute to the spirit of
unity and service that defines our nation.
