They might not take up a lot of space in an airplane seat, but all children under the age of 16 -even infants- are required to have a valid passport for air travel to another country.

With passport application demands for all ages setting records in Kane County and waiting times at the U.S. Dept. of State for processing soaring, people are urged to start the process of renewing or obtaining a new passport months before they plan to travel abroad. Unlike adults, the application process for children under the age of 16 needs to be completed in person with at least one parent needing to appear.  Minors 17 years and older must also appear in person during the application process.

Information about how to apply for a passport and what information and documents are needed to apply is available at https://clerk.kanecountyil.gov/VitalRecords/Pages/Passports.aspx.

For a fee, the Kane County Clerk's Office also offers to take your photo for your passport application.
