Third Annual Kane County Government Garden Growing Goodwill
The third annual Kane County Volunteer Garden is already taking root, and volunteers are hopeful it will be just as fruitful as previous years, with a few new surprises.
In its inaugural year, the Kane County Government Volunteer Garden grew an abundant yield with 1,031 pounds donated to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry (www.bataviafoodpantry.org ). Last year was another successful year, with more than 500 pounds of food donated to the local community, for a total of nearly 1,600 pounds donated since its inception.
This year's garden features vegetables and herbs- including pantry favorites tomatoes and peppers again, cilantro and basil and a few newcomers including broccoli, cucumbers, lettuce and peas/beans.
Kane County staff volunteers developed and maintain the 24-by-24-foot garden plot on the Geneva campus. During harvest season volunteers then deliver their bounty every week to the food pantry.
The Government Center Garden was made possible with the donation of materials and services by the Geneva Home Depot, which donated a soaker hose, tomato cages, seedling plants, seeds and other supplies. In addition, the Kane County Forest Preserve provided mulch for the garden.
