Kane County Highlights Two Separate Exemptions for Senior Citizen Taxpayers:
The Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption (commonly called the “Senior Exemption") reduces the taxable valuation of a property by up to $8,000 in assessed value. It is for taxpayers who:
- Own and reside in a home as a principal dwelling place; and
- Are 65 or older by December 31 of the tax assessment year (if there are two owners, only one needs to be 65).
An initial application must be filed with the Kane County Assessment Office. Once approved, the exemption remains in place without annual reapplication as long as the senior taxpayer continues to own the home and use it as a principal dwelling. The Low-income Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption (commonly called the “Senior Freeze Exemption") eliminates the taxable valuation of a property by any amount since the base year valuation, effectively freezing the taxable valuation of the property. It is for taxpayers who:
- Own and reside in a home as a principal dwelling place for a full calendar year prior to January 1, 2024;
- Are 65 or older by December 31 of the tax assessment year (if there are two owners, only one needs to be 65); and
- Have a household income of no more than $65,000 in the prior taxable year.
An initial application must be filed with the Kane County Assessment Office for each year the exemption is sought. For more information or for an application, please visit https://assessments.KaneCountyIL.gov/Pages/Senior-Assessment-Freeze.aspx.
