Kane County Sherriff's Office Issues Warning About "Jury Duty" and "Warrant" Scam

Kane County Sheriff's Office Media Post 6/27/2025 8:00AM

It has recently come to the attention of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office that two phone scams are currently targeting residents in the Kane County area.

1. The “Jury Duty Scam”
This scam begins with a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office or a Kane County court official.
They may say you missed jury duty—even though you never received a notice—and claim there is a warrant for your arrest. The caller will tell you the only way to cancel the warrant is to pay a fine.
If you refuse, they might threaten you with jail time. Some scammers may also ask for personal information such as your Social Security number or date of birth to make the scam seem more convincing—or to steal your identity.

2. The “Warrant Scam”
In this version, someone posing as a lieutenant from our agency will claim you have a warrant for your arrest. They may share your name, address, and a fake case or badge number to sound legitimate.
With modern technology, scammers can even spoof their caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from the Sheriff’s Office or a local court.

How to Spot a Scam:

  • The Kane County Sheriff’s Office will never call you to request payment to avoid arrest or jail.

  • Only scammers demand payment through gift cards, payment apps, cryptocurrency, wire transfers (like MoneyGram or Western Union), or cash sent by mail.

  • The courts will not ask for personal information like your Social Security number or date of birth over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious call:

  • Hang up immediately.

  • Do not give out personal information or make any payments.

  • If you're unsure whether a call is real, contact the Kane County Sheriff’s Office directly. If it’s after hours, call our non-emergency dispatch center at 630-232-8400.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is committed to protecting residents and urges everyone to stay alert and report suspicious activity. Don’t fall victim to these scams—spread the word and stay informed.
