The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is the first in Illinois to deploy “The Grappler,” a device that helps stop police chases before they escalate. Mounted on the front of a police SUV, the Grappler shoots out a net that wraps around a fleeing vehicle’s rear tire, locking it in place and bringing the pursuit to a halt.
Sheriff’s Chief of Operations David Wolf highlighted its effectiveness, telling the Daily Herald, “We can stop a pursuit before it really starts.”
The sheriff’s office successfully used it for the first time in Elgin to stop a fleeing suspect within seconds.
