Donations of cold weather clothing were collected for local families during a weekend drive hosted annually by the Kane County Office of Emergency Management (KCOEM).

KCOEM partnered with Maddie's Mitten March, based in Aurora.  In three hours, the event collected over 100 coats and over 100 pieces of winter essentials including gloves, hats and scarves.

Among the donors was Tanya Reyes of Sugar Grove.  She dropped off a large tote full of handmade hats and a blanket.

“Years ago, Maddie's Mittens taught me how to knit hats," said Reyes.  “Now I just knit hats with the extra yarn I have and donate them, knowing they will go to someone who will use them and benefit from them."

Maddie's Mitten March is a 501(C)(3) charity organization started by its namesake, Maddie when she was 10 years old.  She saw students in her school without gloves or mittens and decided to host a mitten drive, that later turned into a weather clothing drive.  Today they focus on distributing winter clothing in Kane County.

Maddie's Mitten March uses two buses to collect, hold, and distribute their donations.  Learn more about their efforts at www.mittenmobile.com.

Kane County's Office of Emergency Management supports a regional all-hazard approach to disaster management and Homeland Security through the coordination of programs that promote community planning, increase public awareness, and develop effective mitigation, response, and recovery capabilities.  Learn more or volunteer at www.kcoem.org .
