Kane County’s Historic Preservation Efforts Safeguard Local Landmarks

Kane County Connects Staff 3/25/2025 2:00PM

Kane County is home to a rich history, and through its Historic Preservation Commission, efforts continue to identify, protect, and preserve the county's most significant properties, structures, and road corridors. The commission is responsible for reviewing nominations and recommending sites for designation as historic landmarks, ensuring they remain a part of the county's cultural and architectural heritage. The commission also reviews exterior alterations, new construction, and demolitions involving designated landmarks or properties within historic districts.

This preservation effort dates back to 1988, when the Kane County Board unanimously adopted the Historic Preservation Ordinance—the first of its kind in Illinois. This ordinance established the Historic Preservation Commission, which has since designated 45 individual landmarks, one landmark district (LaFox), and four Rustic Road corridors: Thurnau Road (Rutland Township), Brundige Road (St. Charles & Blackberry Townships) Ke-De-Ka Road (Sugar Grove Township) Pouley Road (Blackberry Township)

Additionally, Kane County has partnered with local municipalities to extend its preservation program. Intergovernmental agreements allow the county to assist in maintaining landmark status for historic sites in Sugar Grove that covers the Ke-De-Ka Road Rustic Road Corridor,  Pingree Grove for the St. Peter's Evangelical Church, and Campton Hills for the 11 designated landmarks that already existed before the area was incorporated, with continued oversight on future designations.

Designation as a historic landmark is voluntary, allowing property owners to play an active role in preserving local history. Currently, the Kane County Board is considering a designation for Echo Valley Farm in Campton Hills. Stay tuned for an upcoming feature on the farm in Kane County Connects.
