Fast Carts, Full Hearts: Kane County Joins in on Charity Shopping Spree
Ready, set, shop! The aisles of the Batavia Jewel turned into a high-speed racetrack as Kane County Board Member Bill Roth and St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek grabbed their carts and dashed for a good cause in the 24th Annual Kane County Farm Bureau Shopping Spree.
Each year, the Kane County Farm Bureau and its foundation rally support for local nonprofits. This time, the beneficiaries were Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora and Lazarus House in St. Charles. The goal? Snag as many non-perishable groceries as possible in just five minutes—or, in this case, an extended seven minutes of shopping fun.
Roth, backed by a team including Kane County Board Members Anita Lewis and Deborah Allan, tore through the aisles, piling carts high. When the final beep sounded at checkout, the combined total of both efforts topped $3,800 in food, with Vitek narrowly edging out Roth by just $23.
The big winner, however, was the charitable organizations that received all the food collected and purchased by the Kane County Farm Bureau, which has donated over $50,000 to the shopping spree since its inception 24 years ago.
