Donald Purn, co-steward of Schweitzer Woods Forest Preserve in West Dundee, has been recognized with a 2023-2024 Illinois Governor’s Service Award for his outstanding volunteerism. Purn’s dedication to preserving and sharing the natural beauty of Schweitzer Woods has earned him praise from the community and the Forest Preserve of Kane County.

Robb Cleave, Volunteer Coordinator at the Forest Preserve, commended Purn for his remarkable contributions. Working alongside co-steward June Keibler, Purn has played a vital role in bringing Schweitzer Woods to the community through educational programs, workdays, and habitat improvements around the Schweitzer Environmental Center. His passion for nature is reflected in his cataloging of the preserve's elements through photography.

Purn, an avid history buff, also shares the rich history of the Schweitzer Woods property, which was generously donated by Emily Schweitzer in December 1989. Schweitzer’s wish was to preserve the 160-acre property as open space for future generations to enjoy.

Expressing his gratitude, Purn thanked the community for the opportunity to share the wonders of nature. He has become an asset not only to the Forest Preserve but also to the Friends of the Fox.

Purn is believed to be the first volunteer to receive this prestigious honor from the State.
