“Youth Are Worth It” Learning Event for Juvenile Detention Facilities held in the 16th Judicial Circuit
On October 9, 2024, Kane County's 16th Judicial Circuit hosted Illinois' first statewide assembly of temporary juvenile detention facility stakeholders, coordinated by the Administrative Office of Illinois Courts (AOIC). Over 60 participants, including Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis and Justice Elizabeth M. Rochford, gathered to discuss collaboration, facility management, and juvenile justice.
16th Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Robert Villa underscored the complexity of managing juvenile facilities, which involves coordination among various state and local entities, emphasizing that collaboration is essential for effective management. Kane County’s Director of Court Services, Lisa Aust, emphasized the role of staff as positive change agents for detained youth, while Juvenile Detention Superintendent Mike Davis led a panel with former residents, facilitating discussions on improving detention experiences.
Chief Justice Theis highlighted the importance of the Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Prevention Act and protecting vulnerable youth, while AOIC’s Director of Probation Services, Daniel S. Hunt, celebrated the event’s success in fostering dialogue and collaboration. AOIC expressed appreciation to the Coalition for Juvenile Justice and the U.S. Department of Justice for funding the event.
