Kane County Coroner's Office Reports on Veteran Suicides: Calls for Continued Support
The Kane County Coroner's Office has analyzed data concerning the loss of local veterans to suicide.
“I've heard in many instances that this is important data for the community, and we all understand why," said Coroner Dr. Monica Silva.
According to the numbers compiled by the Coroner's Office, there were a total of 224 suicides in Kane County between 2020 and 2024, with 13 of those being veterans. The highest number of veteran suicides recorded in a single year was five, reported in 2021.
The veterans ranged in age from 21 to 85, with an average age of 60. Three were confirmed to have been diagnosed with depression or PTSD, while the others involved chronic health issues or terminal diagnoses.
Coroner Silva noted that 2024 marked the lowest number of veteran suicides, with only one reported case.
“Whatever we are doing right to reach out and support the mental health of our veterans, we need to keep doing it," said Silva. “I want to be able to report back to you next year that the number of deaths by suicide in our veteran population is what it is today for 2025: zero."
