Kane County's Forensic Lab's Expansion Plans on Track with Federal Grant

Kane County has formally accepted nearly $1 million in federal funding to expand its regional forensic laboratory. During a gathering on Sept. 16, 2024, officials highlighted the lab's key objectives: accelerating criminal investigations, streamlining court processes, and providing timely answers to grieving families.  The lab is a first for Kane County.

Since June, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office has operated a small on-site forensic lab, staffed by two full-time, skilled forensic technicians.       Forensic Center 1.jpg

Prior to establishing its own lab, Kane County outsourced autopsy testing to an out-of-state facility, often taking two weeks or more for results. The new county-operated lab will save both time and the costs associated with using private forensic toxicology labs or relying solely on the Illinois State Police lab.

“Investing in the Kane County forensic science center is essential,” said Kane County Coroner Rob Russell. “We envision it becoming a central hub for forensic investigations, which will expedite case resolutions locally. This is a vital component in achieving timely justice for victims and their loved ones.”

The federal grant will be used to purchase DNA analysis equipment, which is expected to reduce testing times from up to a year to just a few weeks. The lab will also acquire equipment for drug testing and postmortem toxicology, further reducing costs and improving efficiency.

Future funding plans include hiring additional staff, upgrading software, and enhancing toxicology capabilities, with the goal of eventually making the lab self-sustaining by serving other counti​
