Kane County Clerk's Office Media Release 10/8/2024 1:00PM

Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham today encouraged Kane County residents with a desire to be a part of the election process to apply to serve as Election Judges for the November 5 General Election.

Clerk Cunningham said, “Although it is the responsibility of the major political parties to send the names of Election Judges to the Clerk's Office, my office assists in recruiting additional judges to make sure that elections run smoothly. I encourage individuals who are looking for a way to serve the public to apply to be an Election Judge, and I look forward to welcoming you to our team."

Election Judges have many responsibilities and perform several tasks on Election Day, including opening the polling place in the morning and closing it at night, setting up election equipment, assisting voters, verifying voter qualifications, distributing ballots/activation cards for touch-screen machines, operating voting equipment, filling out forms, and processing votes at the end of the night.

High school juniors and seniors can also serve as a Student Election Judge if they meet eligibility requirements, including being a U.S. citizen by the time of the election, maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, successfully completing an election judge training course conducted by the Clerk's office, and having written approval from the school principal and a parent/guardian. Student judges share the same responsibilities, hold the same authority, and perform the same tasks as other Election Judges.

Kane County residents who want to serve as an Election Judge or Student Judge are encouraged to apply by visiting https://clerk.kanecountyil.gov/Elections/ Pages/Election-Judges.aspx or calling (630) 232-5990.

All Judges serve from 5:00 a.m. until all votes have been processed after polls close on Election Day, which can be 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. Certified Election Judges who complete a training program with the Clerk's Office receive $250 for Election Day.

Cunningham added, “Kane County elections are managed locally by the County Clerk's Office with the assistance of Election Judges. Election Judges are your friends and neighbors who volunteer to step forward to support the democratic process. They are important and play a critical role in every step of our elections. We cannot continue to run secure, successful, and transparent elections with our wonderful, hardworking Election Judges."

The Clerk's Office has developed innovative ways to serve the public, including expanding early voting, establishing a call center to resolve Election Day issues, developing a Voter Outreach Program to increase voter registration and early voting, increase election security and transparency, and improving technology. More information for the Nov. 5 General Election is available at clerk.kanecountyil.gov/elections or by calling (630) 232-5990.
