Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week - Sunflower
“It always gives me a shiver when I see a cat seeing what I can't see." – Eleanor Farjeon, English author, children's stories, plays & poetry
Her name might suggest a sunny, social disposition, a real cuddler—a cat that will welcome her owner home with cries of delight as she purrs happily on their lap waiting for chin scritches and pets.
Sunflower, a 1-year-old gray tabby blended with a tortie Domestic Shorthair, is not that accommodating.
She much prefers leaving interaction with humans off her list, aptly entitled “The 100 Most Fun Things to Do When You're a Cat." In her feline mind, staying as independent as possible is a large part of how she handles her days and nights.
Perhaps she's a reincarnation of Greta Garbo, the Swedish-American actress who hated the intense spotlight of fame. The iconic phrase, “I want to be alone," from the 1932 film Grand Hotel, although attributed to her, was widely misquoted. The actual quote was, “I want to be let alone."
No matter how it's translated, Sunflower is a loner and she likes it that way. Her nurturing and love language is getting treats and eating her meals by herself, no other cats around to get in her way.
Sunflower doesn't like toys, doesn't like to play typical feline games such as catch the fish, grab the ball from the ring-thingy, or chase the red dot of a laser pointer.
Her full attention is on food, treats and “chilling" while making it all look effortless. She's also really proficient at going from one room to another, letting herself be seen by her caretakers and then maintaining her elite posture of, “It's wonderful for you to see me! Please do not pick me up."
If you want to join the millions of cat owners who have a cat without really having to spend too much time with the cat, then Sunflower is the perfect pet to have.
