Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week

KCAC's Adorable, Adoptable Pet of the Week is written by Tecla Metzel of Kane County Animal Control. 9/24/2023 11:00AM

“When bored, find a little cat and watch it; when very bored, find two little cats and watch them!" Mehmet Murat Ildan, Turkish playwright, novelist and thinker

Life is hard and scary, especially if you're only a 4-month-old, frightened stray kitten found hiding in Montgomery.

His name is Squash, which is kind of a strange name for a kitten, but then again, his best friend is named Zucchini. If you think there might be a squash-family theme going on here, you would be correct. Do I hear a vote for Pattypan?

When Squash first came to KCAC, he was absolutely terrified of humans, probably for good reason. Cowering in the corner was the only way he could cope with living in the shelter. Over time, however, a marvelous thing began to happen.

After a lot of hard work and encouragement from KCAC staff, i.e., sitting with Squash in the cat room during lunches and after work, Squash learned that humans aren't so bad, especially if you need a snuggle or two.

However, Squash isn't a kitten you can sneak up on to try to pet him—even now.

The best way to approach him is with lots of cat toys. Squash loves toys and will chase them, bat at them and push them all over the floor. Squash's ideal owner will understand that and be willing to play with him as well as understand that it's okay for him to act shy sometimes.

His new owner will make it their mission to spend quality time with him in order to help him flourish into the snuggly cat we know he can be. Once he feels safe, he will spend a lot of time “making biscuits" right next to you as you watch your preferred show or read your favorite novella.

Squash is ready, willing and able to give you the best years of your life watching him turn into the sweetest, cuddliest cat you will ever have.

Congratulations to Jerri, the exceptional, energetic 1-year-old white boxer-mix that is hearing challenged.

Jerri definitely proves that there is someone for everyone when she found her forever family this past week. She never let her challenges hold her back from enjoying her life or playing with her rope toy or greeting each day with a smile.

Her new family is more than willing to adjust their lives to work with her so she can comfortably fit into her new life without fear or dread. Her tail never stopped wagging as she was lead out to her new family's vehicle and hopped in. The smile on her face as they pulled away said it all.

“I finally have a home. I finally have a family!"

Our hearts go with you, Jerri!
