Kane County Marks 25 Years of Farmland Protection Program

The Kane County Board has proclaimed April 10, 2026, as the 25th anniversary of the county's Farmland Protection Program, recognizing a quarter-century of efforts to preserve agricultural land and support the region's farming heritage.

The program, established to protect high-quality farmland from development, has permanently preserved more than 6,000 acres across the county. Officials say the initiative plays a key role in maintaining the area's economic vitality, environmental health and rural character.

Kane County is home to some of the most productive agricultural land in Illinois, with farming continuing to serve as a cornerstone of the local economy and food system.

The Farmland Protection Program operates in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Soil and Water Conservation District, the Kane County Farm Bureau and The Conservation Foundation. Together, the groups work to safeguard prime soils, support farmers and promote sustainable land use.

County leaders said farmland preservation helps strengthen the regional food supply, protect natural resources and ensure open space for future generations.
