With 509 working farms spanning 146,717 acres, Kane County’s agricultural industry generates $284 million in annual sales, contributing significantly to the local economy. Small and mid-sized farms make up a substantial portion of this sector, with half of the county’s agricultural operations covering 49 acres or less.
Farms across Kane County support a diverse range of agricultural activities, including commodity crops, livestock, equine operations, fruit and vegetable production, beekeeping, floriculture, and dairy farming. The county is also home to a thriving agritourism industry, offering educational programs, seasonal entertainment, and special event venues that connect residents to local food sources.
Kane County ranks ninth in Illinois for horse population, with nearly one in five farms stabling horses. Additionally, the county boasts a rich agricultural legacy, with 15 centennial farms and 30 sesquicentennial farms, showcasing generations of farming traditions.
“Our farmers are stewards of the land and providers of fresh, healthy food for our communities,” the proclamation states. “We value their contributions and invite all Kane County residents to celebrate National Agriculture Day.”
