KDOT Drivers Get Hands-On Snowplow Training Inside a Simulator
With winter approaching, Kane County Division of Transportation drivers are getting behind the wheel virtually.
On Sept. 2 and 3, KDOT brought in a 42-foot mobile simulator that recreated the inside of a snowplow, complete with projected winter conditions and controls identical to those in KDOT trucks.
Drivers worked through realistic scenarios including whiteout conditions, icy roads, tire blowouts and pedestrians or animals entering the roadway. The simulator even shakes when a truck hits rumble strips and responds to simulated loss of traction.
Both new and experienced drivers participated in training tailored to their skill levels. The exercise is particularly valuable this year as KDOT welcomes several new snowplow drivers.
“We got positive feedback from our team after the training, who described it as very realistic without actually having it snowing," said KDOT Superintendent of Maintenance Mike Way. “It was a good investment to get the crews ready for winter."
The training doesn't end in the simulator. KDOT drivers will also take the actual snowplows onto the road to test the vehicles and equipment and get accustomed to handling the trucks with plows attached.
KDOT's Maintenance Department has 30 snowplow trucks, three anti-icing trucks, and a snow blower.
Crews use an enhanced rock salt mixture to improve melting and reduce corrosion. They also apply salt brine to curves, hills and bridge decks before snow or ice events to help prevent buildup.
KDOT also installs eight miles of snow fence and works with farmers through a living snow fence program. Farmers are compensated for leaving six to 10 rows of corn along roadsides, helping reduce drifting snow and lower snow-removal costs.
KDOT is responsible for plowing 800 lane miles of road in Kane County, divided into 23 routes. The full system typically takes about two hours to complete a single pass.
