The Kane County Board has proclaimed April 22, 2025, as Earth Day and recognizes April as Earth Month. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” emphasizes the need for global action on renewable energy.

Kane County's recent sustainability efforts include:

  • Expanding Solar Energy – In 2019, Kane County Animal Control became the first county building to use solar power. In 2023, the county launched a 2-megawatt solar field at the Judicial Center, projected to save taxpayers $5 million over 25 years.

  • Planning for a Sustainable Future – The Kane County 2040 Plan supports renewable energy and climate action. The Climate Action Implementation Plan outlines strategies to achieve sustainability goals.

  • Reducing Waste – Kane County has recycled 5 million pounds of electronics in the past five years.

  • Protecting Water Resources – The county works with experts and officials to secure sustainable water supplies and protect the Fox River through conservation and education efforts.

  • Preserving Open Space – The Kane County Forest Preserve District manages over 23,000 acres of natural land, including woodlands, wetlands, and prairies.
