In a full-circle moment, history was made in Aurora as Brian Moreno, 28, was sworn in as the youngest member in recent history to serve on the East Aurora School District 131 Board of Education.

From his early days as a student in District 131 to his graduation from East Aurora High School in 2015, he now returns—not as a student, but as a leader—helping to shape the future of the district that shaped him.

Moreno fills the seat vacated by former board member Alex Arroyo, who was appointed to the Kane County Board. His appointment marks a personal milestone and serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of community investment and leadership development.

Among the distinguished attendees at the swearing-in ceremony was Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, a fellow East Aurora alumnus, who praised Moreno’s long-standing dedication to the city.

“We have literally watched Brian grow from a middle school student into one of our premier young community leaders,” said Mayor Irvin. “He is not only a dedicated City Hall staffer but also a true hero who has put his life on the line for others.”

Currently serving as a Community Engagement Coordinator at Aurora City Hall, Moreno plays a vital role in organizing neighborhood activities and fostering community initiatives. His passion for service extends beyond his professional role—he has literally saved lives.

Last year, Moreno bravely protected guests at a warming center during an active shooter situation, ensuring their safe evacuation. In another heroic act, he performed CPR on a community member in cardiac arrest, helping to save their life.

Now, as he steps into his role on the East Aurora Board of Education, Moreno remains committed to uplifting the next generation—students who sit in the same classrooms where he once dreamed of his future.

“I simply want to be who I needed when I was younger,” Moreno reflected after his first board meeting.
