Kane County Begins Planning Process for FY2027 Budget
While the Kane County budget for fiscal year (FY) 2027 won't be formally approved until later in the year, County Board members are currently working to lay the groundwork through discussions and meetings to establish a calendar for key benchmarks. By starting early, the Board aims to reduce pressure on county staff, maintain a structured budget process and ensure transparency for residents.
Last year, the board approved a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2026, through cooperation among elected officials and department heads. Overall budget requests were reduced by as much as 10 percent, allowing the County Board to close a general fund gap while preserving mandated county services.
General fund expenses were reduced by nearly $14 million, a 9.7 percent decrease, and the use of reserves dropped by 77 percent, from $27.2 million in FY2025 to $6.3 million in FY2026. The final FY2026 budget totals $405 million, including $127 million in the general fund and $278 million in special revenue funds. While the General Fund is operating with a planned $6.3 million deficit, the reduced reliance on reserves indicates progress toward long-term sustainability.
Members of the public can follow the Kane County Board's work on the FY2027 budget by watching or attending Finance Committee, Executive Committee, or County Board meetings.
