 
            July 1 Brings Increase in State's Gas Tax
Illinois Gas Tax Overview
- Recent Increase: On July 1, 2024, the gas tax in Illinois increased from 45 cents to 47 cents per gallon. 
- Revenue: Since July 1, 2023, Illinois has collected over $2.5 billion in fuel taxes, according to the state. 
- National Rank: Illinois has the second-highest gas tax in the U.S., after California, which charges 60 cents per gallon
- Origins: The gas tax started in 1977. 
- 2019 Hike: In 2019, the tax was raised from 19 cents to 38 cents per gallon to fund a $45 billion infrastructure project. 
- 2022 Freeze: There was a six-month freeze on the gas tax in July 2022 to help with economic recovery after COVID-19 
- EV Owners: Electric vehicle owners, who don’t pay the gas tax, are charged an extra $100 annually in addition to their registration fee to make up for lost tax revenue. 
- Annual Increases: The gas tax goes up every year to keep up with inflation.
