Kane County Marks National Poverty Awareness Month with Proclamation
January marks National Poverty Awareness Month, an observance established by Congress in 2009 to raise awareness about the issue of poverty affecting communities across the nation. The month serves as an opportunity for communities and indivduals to reflect on the challenges faced by those living in poverty and to continue to look at solutions aimed at improving their well-being.
Despite some objections, the Kane County Board, by majority vote, approved a proclamation recognizing poverty as a local concern.
According to the Kane County Health Department, approximately one in 12 residents, or 42,000 people, live below the federal poverty line. This includes roughly one in eight children, or 15,000 young individuals. Additionally, an estimated 461 people experienced homelessness in Kane County in 2023.
The Northern Illinois Food Bank reported assisting an average of 75,000 individuals per month. Robert Desio, Senior Manager of Public Policy and Benefits with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, was present to accept the proclamation and emphasized to the board the ongoing need for support and resources for those facing hunger.
