Kane County Board Chairman Serves up Awareness During Meals on Wheels Volunteer Event
Kane County Board Chairman Corinne Pierog recently joined Kane Senior Council to deliver meals to residents at Constitution House as part of the national March for Meals campaign.
The seven-story apartment complex in Aurora serves approximately 230 low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities. During the visit, Pierog accompanied volunteer Tina Johnson, who has been delivering meals in Kane County for more than a year and a half.
“I ask how they're doing. Some don't want to talk, others do, and I can check to see if they're OK or if anything has changed since I visited the week before," Johnson said. “With a knock on their door, I can help put a smile on their face."
In addition to providing nutritious meals, the program helps reduce isolation, a major health risk for older adults.
During the visit, Johnson and Pierog delivered meals to several residents, including a new client who welcomed the interaction and conversation. The resident said she had lived at Constitution House for about 10 years after moving from Chicago. When asked by Chairman Pierog whether she was a White Sox or Cubs fan, she laughed and said she roots for whichever team is winning.
Over the course of about an hour, Johnson continued her route, delivering meals to six more apartments, each stop met with appreciation from residents.
“With Kane County's senior population expected to grow significantly over the next two decades, we have begun discussions with our Townships about the housing, programming and services older adults will need," Pierog said. “One example is supporting Meals on Wheels, that helps our older residents maintain their independence at home. Taking care of one another is what Kane County is all about."

According to the U.S. Census, more than 83,000 Kane County residents are age 65 or older. In 2024, the Kane Senior Council served approximately 2,620 seniors, delivering 195,000 meals, completing 138,500 wellness checks and providing more than 31,000 instances of health education.
Kane Senior Council has served older adults in Kane County since 2018, building on roots that date back to 1974 with the DuPage Senior Citizens Council. The organization addresses senior hunger through meal delivery while offering a range of services — including wellness checks, pet assistance, education and social programs — to help seniors remain independent, connected and active in the community.
“I spend about an hour each day volunteering to deliver meals, then go on with the rest of my day feeling good about helping others," Johnson said.
