SCAM ALERT: Scam Targets Families of Kane County Jail Inmates
The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has received reports of a scam targeting the families of individuals incarcerated in the Kane County Jail.
According to reports, scammers are calling family members and requesting a $2,000 retainer fee in exchange for the release of an incarcerated individual. This is a scam.
The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and Kane County Sheriff’s Office will never ask individuals to send money directly for any reason. In addition, Illinois does not have cash bail.
Scammers may have an inmate’s full name or other personal information. However, this does not mean the call is legitimate. Certain information, including the names of individuals housed in the Kane County Jail, is public record and available to anyone.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call or is unsure whether a request is legitimate should hang up and contact the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office directly at (630) 232-3500.
The State’s Attorney’s Office encourages residents to share this information to help protect family members, friends and others in the community.
