Kane County 2024 Recycling Events - Green Guide

Kane County Recycles is out with a new Green Guide suggestions and directions on how to dispose of almost everything responsibly.  The guide also contains a calendar of recycling events in 2024 (see below).  To see the complete Kane County Recycles Green Guide, click here.    For residensts on the Kane County Recyles mailing list to receive a paper copy of the guide, it should arrive by the end of the first week of March at the latest.  By that time, quantities of the print guide will also be available at town halls, libraries, and other public places.

Shredding and More Event Details

What: 

  • Confidential document shredding, ​Kane Co. residents only - free
  • Collection of clothing, textiles, small home goods - free
  • Collection of latex paint - per item fee, see below
  • Collection of aerosols, small propane tanks, smoke detectors, batteries, child car seats - per item fees, see below

When: Saturday, May 4th, 2024, 8am - noon. Rain or shine (will close or cancel for emergency weather conditions)

Where: Circuit Court Building/"Old Montgomery Wards", 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. Site map coming in spring. 

How: You, yes you dear document holders, are the keys to making sure the event is as efficient and painless as possible for everyone. Ready, Shreddy...GO! by knowing the program limits, preparing your documents properly, and by knowing what to expect on-site. Read all about it here !

Clothing & Accessories Acceptance: All clothing in clean/dry/sanitary condition is accepted in reusable and non-reusable condition. Items with rips, permanent stains, broken zippers, etc. and items like used socks and undergarments that you might not usually take to a thrift store are fine. Please, no wet, moldy, or bug-infested materials. Among accessories, luggage, wallets, bags, belts, fashion jewelry, shoes, hats and gloves are all accepted.

​Home Textile Acceptance: Most home textiles in clean/dry/sanitary condition are accepted. Please, no wet, moldy, or bug-infested materials. Examples of accepted home textiles include bedding, towels, washcloths, drapes/curtains, furniture slip covers, pillow cases, table cloths, cloth napkins, sleeping bags, and small (5' x 7' or smaller) area rugs. No mattresses, carpet remnants, large rugs/carpets or furniture.

Small Home Good/Home Decor Acceptance: Many small home goods and decor items are accepted in reusable condition (i.e., should not be obviously broken, missing pieces, wet or moldy, etc.) Accepted items include vases, decorative baskets, small storage baskets, throw pillows, wall art/wall hangings, small ornaments/decorative items, books, toys (both plush and rigid items), games & puzzles, office supplies and small office equipment (i.e. desk lamps, lap desks, small office storage, etc.), dishes, kitchen glassware, utensils, small working kitchen electrics (toasters, blenders, rice cookers, etc.) No large plastic storage containers, large office electrics (printers, scanners, etc.), binders, large kitchen electrics (fridges, microwaves, etc.), televisions or other home entertainment electronics, furniture, household chemicals of any kind. 

Latex Paint Acceptance: Liquid latex paint and other latex-based coatings are accepted. Please do not combine cans of paint. Our vendor cannot accept dried out latex paint (regular garbage) or oil-based paints (household hazardous waste). 

Aerosol & Propane Tank Acceptance: Most household aerosol products, empty or partially full, are accepted. Small capacity (16 oz. or smaller) propane tanks only.

Costs (payable to vendors on-site with cash or card): 

  • ​Shredding: FREE!
  • Clothing, textile, small home goods: FREE!
  • ​Latex paint: 
    • Quart cans or smaller are $1 each​
    • Gallon cans are $3 each
    • 2 gallon cans are $5 each
    • 5 gallon buckets are $15 each
  • Aerosols & isobutane canisters: $1 each
  • Small propane tanks: $4 each
  • Child car seats: $10 each
