Kane County Pet of the Week - Baxter
“Some of our greatest historical and artistic treasures we place with curators in museums; others we take for walks." – Roger A. Caras, American naturalist, animal welfare activist, writer, photographer
He probably thinks his name is “good boy," or “handsomest baby," or maybe even “kissiest face" because we just can't help but throw out as many glowing superlatives as we can think of whenever we see him.
His name is Baxter and he's a 7-month-old brown and white, neutered pit bull found as a stray. He's just so doggone cute, especially when his ears seem to have a life of their own. Sometimes they decide to stand straight up and then, just as suddenly, they disappear, lying close to his head, making him appear totally “earless."
All it takes is one look, one hug, one cuddle and everyone immediately falls in love with him. Baxter gets along well with just about everyone, including women, men, and other dogs, which is why it's so unfathomable that he was ever a stray.
How could anyone let this little guy wander around parking lots, or forage for food or spend a night under a bush? After all, he's still just a puppy, hardly wet behind the ears.
One of his favorite pastimes at the shelter is cuddling up with staff on his cozy bed, especially as he gets ready for night-night. When it's time for him to go outside, he gets a little timid, a little scared. We're not trying to pull out the Freudian handbook here, but possibly he acquaints going outdoors with getting left behind, getting abandoned again. In his puppy mind, by hiding from the outside world, he won't have to leave the only safe place he's known.
Baxter will need a lot of love, plenty of patience and some positive training for him to eventually bloom into the confident young “handsomest boy" he's growing into.
