Kane County Health Department Offers Free 988 Signs as Illinois Expands Crisis Awareness Requirements
As Illinois prepares to expand requirements for displaying suicide and mental health crisis support information, the Kane County Health Department (KCHD) is offering free 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline signs to help raise awareness and connect residents with support.
KCHD is dedicated to promoting 988 throughout Kane County through community partnerships, public education and outreach. By making information about the lifeline more visible in everyday settings, the Health Department aims to help residents recognize that support is available for themselves, their loved ones and others experiencing a mental health crisis.
Two Illinois laws expand requirements for displaying 988 information. Public Act 104-0808 requires designated facilities and organizations to display 988 contact information in prominent, accessible locations. Public Act 104-0691 establishes specific signage requirements for licensed pharmacies. Both laws take effect January 1, 2027.
Under these laws, facilities required to display 988 information include:
- Public libraries
- Public colleges and universities
- Hospitals
- Licensed pharmacies
- Nursing facilities
- Assisted living and shared housing establishments
- Licensed child care centers
- County shelter care homes and detention homes
- Illinois Department of Corrections institutions and facilities
- Programs operated by probation departments
KCHD has free 8.5-by-11-inch 988 signs printed on card stock available for pickup at its Aurora (1240 N. Highland Avenue) and Elgin (2170 Point Blvd.) offices. Businesses, community organizations and other interested groups are encouraged to help spread awareness by displaying signs where appropriate.
“Promoting 988 is an important part of our ongoing commitment to mental health awareness and suicide prevention," said Michael Isaacson, KCHD Executive Director. “We want people throughout Kane County to know that help is available and to recognize 988 as a resource they can turn to during a difficult moment. Visible reminders in community spaces can help make that connection."
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support for people experiencing emotional distress, mental health challenges or thoughts of suicide. Anyone can call or text 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.
