Proclamation Honors Service of Late Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns
The Kane County Board this week proclaimed December 1, 2023 as Aurora Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns Day.
Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns was the first African American and first woman elected to the Aurora City Council in 1991, representing Ward 7 for 32 years. Hart-Burns was born on December 1, 1954, and passed away June 19, 2023.
Hart-Burns also was the first African American appointed Mayor Pro Tem from 2016-2017.
The Kane County Board Proclamation reads as follows:
2023 PROCLAMATION
DECLARING THE FIRST DAY OF DECEMBER 2023
AURORA ALDERWOMAN SCHEKETA HART-BURNS DAY
WHEREAS, we gather here today to celebrate the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Aurora Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns, a true trailblazer, advocate, and beloved pillar of the Aurora community; and
WHEREAS, Aurora Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns, born on the first day of December in the year 1954, was called to Heaven on the nineteenth day of June in the year 2023, a day commemorating Juneteenth, a day of celebration and reflection, symbolizing the significance of her actions throughout her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, in 1991, Aurora Alderwoman Hart-Burns made history by becoming the first African American and the first Woman elected to the Aurora City Council, representing Ward 7 with unwavering dedication for an astounding 32 years; and
WHEREAS, throughout her illustrious career, she exemplified the essence of public service, consistently advocating for those who may have been disadvantaged and striving to create a better more inclusive society for all; and
WHEREAS, her life's work serves as an inspiration to all who follow in her footsteps, reminding us that public service is not just a duty, but a calling to make a positive impact on the lives of others; and
WHEREAS, beyond her dedication to public service, Aurora Alderwoman Hart-Burns touched countless lives with her compassion and love for each person she encountered. Her memorable signature phrase, “love you, love you," resonated with all who were fortunate enough to know her, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts; and
WHEREAS, she led with love, understanding, and empathy, making her a beacon of hope and strength for the people of Kane County; and
WHEREAS, in remembrance of her indomitable spirit, unwavering advocacy, and boundless love, we, the people of Kane County, hereby proclaim that her legacy shall endure through our actions; and
WHEREAS, let us stand united in honoring her memory by embracing her mission and continuing to serve our community with the same passion, dedication, and love that she exemplified throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, we shall celebrate the beautiful life of Aurora Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns, for she will forever remain in our hearts as the Queen of Aurora.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Kane County Board that the first day of December in the year 2023 will be Aurora Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns Day.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, The Kane County Board hereby authorizes and directs the County Chair to set the hand and affix the seal of the County of Kane on this the twenty-first day of November in the year 2023.
