Landmark Public Dashboard Shares Cashless Bail Data in Kane County
Kane County has launched a new SAFE-T Act dashboard that provides the public with a transparent and accurate representation of key performance indicators from court data.
The dashboard was created in collaboration between the Chief Judge, Court Services, the Circuit Clerk and the Information Technologies Department. The dashboard includes important data such as Arresting Agency, Most Serious Charge, Class of Offense, Petition to Detain Granted by the Court and Petition to Detain Filed by the Kane County State's Attorney.
The use of graphics and charts makes it easy for the public to understand and interpret the data presented. The Kane County SAFE-T Act dashboard is an important step towards greater transparency and accountability in the court system.
The dashboard is believed to be the first of its kind in Illinois.
“The goal of the dashboard is to push out to the public, real time information collected on defendants, cases, and court orders to show how the moving parts related to the SAFE-T Act are working here in Kane County," said Kane County Chief Judge Clint Hull.
Back in September, Illinois became the first state in the nation to eliminate the cash bail system. Under a sweeping public safety reform bill known as the SAFE-T Act, judges are no longer requiring individuals charged with certain offenses to post bail while awaiting trial. However, if the person charged is shown to be a threat to public safety or likely to flee prosecution, the judge can order the person held in jail while proceedings against them continue.
Concerns were also raised that cashless bail could trigger a dramatic increase in the use of electronic home monitor as a substitute for a cash bond. Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain says orders for electronic home monitoring have remained steady since the Pre-Trial Fairness Act went into effect.
