Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week - Awkward Jim
“Dogs like everyone. Cats choose who to like.” – Lauren Myracle, American writer of young adult fiction
There’s almost a question in his eyes as he slowly slinks over to your side so you can pet him. “Are you my fur-ever person?” he seems to ask, looking at you the entire time with his golden eyes.
His name is Awkward Jim, or AJ for short. The name may be a little silly because he’s anything but awkward. In fact, he’s a real gentleman with a smooth attitude that’s so unusual in a kitten (because he really is a kitten) of only 6-months-old.
Awkward Jim is a neutered, all-black Domestic Shorthair with a quiet personality that draws other cats to him. His best “bro” is Drifloon, a 7-month-old all gray Domestic Shorthair kitten.
They spend a lot of time together sleeping and climbing on the shelves in the cat room. Wherever AJ goes, Drifloon is sure to follow. So, it’s obvious AJ gets along well with other cats. With his quiet personality and laissez-faire attitude, he seems to take life as it happens. His favorite past time is playing fetch with whatever object happens to get thrown for him.
AJ was found as a stray, but don’t underestimate this kitten! Far from appearing as an underdog, AJ has a streak of daredevil in his DNA—or maybe he just likes to show off his goofy side. Kennel staff who have spent the most time with AJ say he has an orange cat’s personality wrapped inside a black cat. Orange cats seem to have the reputation of not only having an extremely friendly and very social personality, but they also can show a stubborn side with a strong will. Sometimes they are classified as not having a lot of common sense, but generally they make very loyal pets.
As an example, AJ enjoys climbing up to the tallest ledge in the cat room, and just when you think he won’t be able to get down, he jumps off, landing on all four paws. As he sails down to the ground, you can almost hear him giggle when he rushes back to try it again and again.
AJ enjoys the company of humans above everything else. With his sense of humor and energy, there is no stopping this genial gentleman from claiming the best family possible.
