Kane County Animal Control to Offer Pet CPR Training for Residents

Kane County Connects Staff 6/10/2026 11:00AM

Kane County Animal Control is helping local pet owners prepare for emergencies by offering training on how to perform CPR and basic lifesaving care for pets.

The educational programs will teach participants how to recognize when a dog or cat is experiencing a medical emergency, including signs of respiratory distress, unconsciousness or cardiac arrest. Attendees will also learn the proper steps for administering CPR, including rescue breathing, chest compressions and airway checks.

“Like humans, knowing how to respond in the first few minutes of an emergency can make a critical difference for a pet," said Kane County Animal Control Director Brett Youngsteadt. “This training gives residents practical skills that could help save the life of a beloved family pet before veterinary help is available."

The course will cover:

  • How to identify when CPR is needed
  • Checking for breathing and pulse
  • Proper positioning for pets during CPR
  • Rescue breathing techniques
  • Chest compressions for small and large dogs and cats
  • Emergency response tips and veterinary follow-up care

Additional information about class dates, registration details and locations will be announced by Kane County Animal Control in the coming weeks.  The classes are free to Kane County residents only and proof of residency will be required.
