This Kane County community was originally known by the Native American name “Sin-Qua-Sip." Its history dates back to the spring of 1834, when its settlement began in what is now Bliss Woods Forest Preserve. Also, in 1972, 13 women became active firefighters in the community, making its fire department the first in the Midwest to have women serving as active firefighters.

This Kane County community was founded by Daniel Gray, who purchased several land grants from the federal government and owned large sections of land in the area. The settlement was originally known as “Graystown." Eventually, Gray persuaded other settlers to rename the village after the New York County where he and several other early settlers had lived.
