Barbara Alexander and the late Larry Becker were both recognized for their years of service for preserving Kane County’s history as founding members of the County’s Historic Preservation Commission.
The Commission was created by the County Board back in 1988 to accept nominations for sites, districts or road corridors that might qualify as historic landmarks, and whether or not to recommend that they be designated as such by the County. The nine members of the Commission are appointed by the County Board and come from all geographic sections of the County.
Becker, who passed away in 2021, was remembered for his extensive knowledge of building construction as well as the history of Burlington and northern Kane County. A 34-year member of the Historic Preservation Commission, his passion for history made him a consummate student, attending seminars on cemetery preservation and Historic Preservation Commissioner education. His wife, Margene, accepted a plaque on his behalf that thanked him for his contributions.
Also recognized was Barbara Alexander, also an original member of the Kane County Historic Preservation Commission, volunteered her time for 34 years. She was acknowledged for her strong preservation ethic, her knowledge of history and architecture and for her work as a liaison to residents of Blackberry Township. As a liaison, she provided them with information and assisted with questions about the County’s historic preservation program. She also was presented a plaque in gratitude for her service.
During Becker and Alexander’s tenure on the Commission, the County designated 45 landmarks, one historic district and four Rustic Roads.
