Kane County Updates Fees for Oversize and Overweight Vehicles to Protect Roads and Bridges
The Kane County Board has approved revised fees for oversize and overweight (OS/OW) vehicle permits, effective January 1, 2026, in an effort to ensure the county's roads and bridges are protected from undue damage.
Kane County issues permits for vehicles that exceed standard size or weight limits and use the road network across the county and its 16 townships. Staff from the Kane County Division of Transportation (KDOT) carefully review each permit application to determine appropriate routes and to assess potential impacts on bridges and pavement structures.
“The goal is to allow necessary commercial and industrial transport while safeguarding our infrastructure," said Mike Zakosek, County Engineer/ Director of the Kane County Division of Transportation. “Oversize and overweight vehicles can cause accelerated wear and tear on roads and bridges, and these revised fees help offset the cost of that maintenance as well as the staff time required to review permits."
The current OS/OW permit fee schedule was established in 1999 and had not been updated since. The revised fees reflect the increased costs of materials, labor, and services over the past 25+ years and closely track with inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index.
Updated Permit Fees:
- Standard: $100 (was $50)
- Standard – Round Trip: $170 (was $85)
- Non-Standard*: $200 (was $100)
- Non-Standard – Round Trip*: $270 (was $135)
- Oversize 90-Day: $500 (was $250)
