Bunker Road Extension Project to Add Fifth Roundabout to Kane County Roads
Kane County is moving forward with the long-planned Bunker Road Extension Project, a major infrastructure improvement designed to enhance north-south connectivity in the western portion of the county between Geneva and Elburn. Led by the Kane County Division of Transportation (KDOT), the project will extend Bunker Road under the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, creating a direct connection with LaFox Road on the way to Route 38.
The extension will run from the LaFox Metra Station to LaFox Road, north of the LaFox Village District Center in unincorporated Blackberry Township. The underpass was originally constructed in 2006 as part of the Metra West Line extension to Elburn, anticipating future road improvements.
A key feature of the project is the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Bunker Road and Keslinger Road. KDOT officials highlight the roundabout’s advantages over traditional stop signs or signal-controlled intersections, citing improved traffic flow, enhanced safety, and lower long-term maintenance costs. This will be the fifth roundabout in Kane County, (IL 47 at Plato Rd, IL 47 at Burlington Rd, Burlington Rd and Bolcum, Fabyan Parkway, Main Street and Bliss Roads.) There is also a muncipal roundabout in Aurora at the intersection of Sullivan Road and Highland Ave.
The Bunker Road Extension Project has been part of Kane County’s long-range transportation plans since 2004 and was first identified in the late 1990s as a critical improvement to enhance travel efficiency in the central portion of the county. Engineering and land acquisition are nearing completion, paving the way for construction to begin in the summer of 2025. The project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2026 for a cost of $11.5 million.
During construction, drivers should expect temporary detours and possible delays. KDOT officials appreciate the community’s patience and will provide updates on detours and project milestones as work progresses.
