Kane County Officially Receives State's $17.5 Million for Longmeadow Parkway Bridge Project
Kane County has received its initial state allocation for the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge project. Lawmakers approved $17.5 million in 2022 to help eliminate planned tolls for motorists using the bridge over the Fox River, which is slated to open later this year.
The 5.6-mile-long Longmeadow Parkway Corridor, including the bridge, passes through portions of Algonquin, Carpentersville, Barrington Hills as well as unincorporated Kane County. It is expected to relieve congestion on Illinois Routes 62 and 72, and the Main Street Bridge in Carpentersville.
On Wednesday, January 3, 2024, Kane County Board Chairman Corinne Pierog signed documents to facilitate the transfer of the 2022 state funding installment for the bridge. She was joined by the committed staff at the Kane County Division of Transportation, who have dedicated decades to planning, designing, and overseeing the construction of the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge Corridor.
The total funding necessary to eliminate the planned toll system is projected to be $35 million. In 2023, legislators again sanctioned an extra $12.5 million to address bridge construction expenses to eliminate the need for a toll. In December, the McHenry County Board committed $1 million to the toll elimination initiative. Cook County has pledged an additional $1 million, leaving the remaining cost to be covered by Kane County.
Longmeadow Parkway is expected to improve highway safety, efficiency and facilitate an increase in business opportunities.
