Kane County Seeks Storm Damage Reports Following Holiday Weekend Flooding

Kane County Connect Staff 7/6/2026 2:00AM

As cleanup continues across Kane County following multiple rounds of severe storms over the Independence Day weekend, the Kane County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is asking residents whose homes or property sustained damage to complete a storm damage self-assessment survey.

The information will help emergency management officials determine the overall impact of the July 3-4 storms and whether the region may qualify for state or federal disaster assistance. Completing the survey does not guarantee financial assistance, but every report is critical in documenting the extent of the damage.

Residents can complete the survey here:

Kane County Storm Damage Self-Assessment Survey

Southern Kane County experienced some of the heaviest rainfall during four rounds of severe thunderstorms that moved through July 3 and 4. According to the National Weather Service, more than 8 inches of rain fell in Sugar Grove and near the Aurora Municipal Airport, while Batavia received more than 5 inches.

The storms caused widespread flooding, road closures, downed trees and power lines throughout the county. Portions of Scott Road between Dauberman Road and Dugan Road in the Kaneville and Big Rock area remain closed after floodwaters washed out part of the roadway. Additional road closures and lane restrictions were reported in Kaneville, Big Rock, North Aurora and Elgin as county crews worked to repair damage and remove debris, most have since reopened.

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County also reported downed trees and high water, forcing the temporary closure of several trails.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, stay clear of downed utility lines, obey all road closure barricades and use caution around emergency crews working throughout the county.

The damage survey is one of the most important steps residents can take following the storm. Even if damage appears minor or is covered by insurance, reporting it helps Kane County and the State of Illinois determine the full scope of the disaster and whether additional recovery assistance may be available.
