Illinois Among Seven Areas to Develop Hydrogen Power Hub
On the heels of roundtable on hydrogen energy, in Kane County, the federal government has announced a $7 billion-dollar commitment to build seven regional hydrogen power hubs in 16 states, including Illinois.
Chosen as one of the hubs is the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen in Illinois, Indiana and Southwest Michigan. It was selected by the U.S. Energy Department as a hub to produce hydrogen with nuclear power. The hub will enable decarbonization of steel and glass production, power generation, refining, heavy-duty transportation, and sustainable aviation fuel.
Kane County recently held a meeting of city and village representatives, lawmakers, energy officials, business coordinators, educators, and other stakeholders to discuss the developing hydrogen economy. The participants engaged in discussions on various aspects of hydrogen energy, including its viability and long range investment opportunities for hydrogen distribution and storage in Kane County.
"Across Illinois and in Kane County investing in clean hydrogen energy
is the next step in supplying a decarbonized, and sustainable fuel
source for transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture
industries," said Kane County Board Chairman Corinne Pierog. "This opportunity to be a part of building a clean energy
future will not only provide good paying jobs, but also include a
commitment to our communities that local priorities are addressed,
safety protocols are secured, and environmental social justice is
ensured."
The group plans to identify hydrogen users, which currently include railroads but could expand to other mass transit systems.
More follow-up meetings are planned, including the potential for another roundtable event next year on the south end of Kane County.
