People who live in Illinois on average live a longer life than many of those in southern states, according to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to the National Vital Statistics Report released on August 23, 2022, Illinois ranks No. 26 among all states, with an average life expectency of 76.8.  This ranks above the states of Arizona (No. 33), Tennessee  (No. 46) and South Carolina (No. 42), often popular retirement destinations.

Mississippi came in last place, with an average life expectency of 71.9 years.  The report also showed that average life expectency overall dropped 1.8 years during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hawaii is the only state where the average life expectency is past the age of 80 (80.7).
