OVERVIEW: U.S. Nears 1 Million COVID Deaths; North Korea Goes on Lockdown; More Trouble For British Prime Minister

President Joe Biden on Thursday marked the approaching milestone of 1 million U.S. deaths in the coronavirus pandemic. “One million empty chairs around the dinner table. Each an irreplaceable loss,” he said in a statement. “Each leaving behind a family, a community, and a nation forever changed because of this pandemic.” Johns Hopkins University reported 999,053 U.S. COVID deaths as of Thursday morning. North Korea imposed a nationwide lockdown Thursday to control its first acknowledged COVID-19 outbreak after holding for more than two years to a widely doubted claim of a perfect record keeping out the virus that has spread to nearly every place in the world. (The Associated Press)

The police investigating lockdown breaking parties in Downing Street said Thursday they had issued 50 more fines, increasing pressure on Britain’s prime minister, Boris Johnson, who had earlier been penalized for one breach. (The New York Times)

 

KANE COUNTY: 178 New Cases, 0 Deaths; Case Rates Continue to Climb

Kane County case rates continue to go up, but deaths remain low as the county stayed in the “medium” community level, according to the Centers for Disease Control website, which updates the map late on Thursdays.

According to data posted today on the Illinois Department of Public Health website, Kane County added 178 new COVID-19 cases but no additional COVID-19 deaths.

The county’s totals to date are 131,372 positive cases and 1,127 COVID-19 deaths.

Kane County’s average case rate rose to 44.7 per 100,000 population. The rate was 42.4 per 100,000 yesterday.

The ICU bed availability average is 26%. The county averages three diagnosed COVID-19 hospital admissions per day.

 

STATE OF ILLINOIS: 5,686 New Cases, 3 Deaths; ICU Bed Availability Dips Under 20%

The state of Illinois recorded 5,686 new COVID-19 cases today but just three deaths.

According to data posted on the IDPH website, the Illinois totals to date are 3,200,930 positive cases and 33,698 COVID-19 deaths.

The percentage of ICU beds available statewide is at 19% — a bit of a concern because the state’s benchmark has been 20%. During earlier phases of the pandemic, a dip under 20% in any of the state’s regions would have triggered additional COVID-19 mitigations.

The state is averaging 77 COVID-19 hospital admissions a day. The daily case rate is 44.1 per 100,000 population, according to the IDPH.
