OVERVIEW: Only 1/3 of All Americans Have Had Even 1 Booster Shot; Some Questions About Paxlovid; China Doubles Down on Zero COVID Strategy

Less than half of eligible Americans — only about a third of the total U.S. population — have gotten a first booster dose, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Only about 10 million people have received a second booster, which is authorized for people 50 and older, along with those who are 12 and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised.

As more doctors prescribe Pfizer’s powerful COVID-19 pill, new questions are emerging about its performance, including why a small number of patients appear to relapse after taking the drug. Paxlovid has become the go-to option against COVID-19 because of its at-home convenience and impressive results in heading off severe disease. But experts say there is still much to be learned about the drug, which was authorized in December for adults at high risk of severe COVID-19 based on a study in which 1,000 adults received the medication.
