OVERVIEW: WHO Says COVID Deaths 3 Times What Was Reported; U.S. Passes 1 Million COVID Deaths; BA.2.12.1 Likely To Be Dominant U.S. Variant in Next 2 Weeks

About 14.9 million people around the world died as a direct or indirect result of COVID-19 in the period between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2021, according to new estimates from the World Health Organization — nearly three times more deaths than were officially reported. There were 5.4 million COVID-19 deaths reported to WHO during that timeframe, resulting in an excess mortality estimate of 9.5 million more deaths than what was reported. (World Health Organization)

The U.S. on Wednesday surpassed 1 million COVID-19 deaths, according to data compiled by NBC News — a once unthinkable scale of loss even for the country with the world’s highest recorded toll from the virus.

Experts say the BA.2.12.1 variant is spreading rapidly and will probably become the dominant form of the virus in the United States in the next few weeks. There’s no indication yet that it causes more severe disease than earlier forms did. (The New York Times)

 

KANE COUNTY: 148 New Cases, 0 Deaths; Positivity Rate Highest Since February

Kane County recorded 148 new COVID-19 cases and no COVID-19 deaths in data reported today by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Kane County’s totals to date are 129,700 positive cases and 1,127 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began.

According to the CDC’s website, Kane County’s seven-day positivity is higher now than it has been since February and is higher than the peak of the Delta surge in August 2021. (See “7-day Percent Positivity” chart above.)

According to the IDPH, Kane County’s daily COVID case rate is 33.5 per 100,000 population.

Some good news is that the percentage of available ICU beds remains at 32% in Kane County — about 11 percentage points higher than the state of Illinois as a whole.

 

STATE OF ILLINOIS: 4,148 New Cases, 10 Deaths; 21% ICU Beds Available Statewide

The state of Illinois recorded 4,148 new COVID-19 cases and 10 additional deaths today.

The totals statewide are 3,161,606 positive cases and 33,653 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began.

Illinois dropped to an average 21% in ICU bed availability — getting close to the IDPH threshold of 20%.

COVID-19 diagnosed hospital admissions continue to rise, with an average of 69 a day.

The daily case rate is up to 32.4 per 100,000 population.
